Ericka Kopp
Ericka Kopp is running for Congress in Virginia’s first district to bring access and accountability through action. Ericka grew up in the first district. She was raised by the people of this community and chose to stay here because of its inclusivity. Ericka is a first generation American on her mother’s side, a first generation college graduate, and the first ever on either side of her family to become an attorney. She’s also biracial, bisexual, and bilingual.
As a healthcare lawyer and a caregiver to a disabled veteran, Ericka knows what it means to stand up for someone else because they need it and cannot do it for themselves. She and her partner have been fortunate to have the VA’s assistance, despite its red tape. For people who aren’t veterans and don’t have access to the VA, women disproportionately bear the brunt of caring for others, because we don’t have a government that stands up for everyone. And we should.
Ericka is fighting to fix a broken healthcare system. She’s fighting for you not to have medical debt. She’s fighting to protect your health, your wallet, and your civil rights. Healthcare should be your right, not a privilege, and certainly not a bargaining chip used for political gamesmanship. You need access to healthcare that protects your entire self. You should have healthcare coverage that protects not just your body and mind, but also your teeth, hearing, and vision. We need a comprehensive universal healthcare system. The people telling us we can’t afford this are the people who aren’t concerned with being one medical emergency away from bankruptcy. We can afford this if we tax the rich, close loopholes in the tax code to ensure wealthy corporations pay their fair share, and introduce new revenue streams into the economy.
